Whitney Houston Funeral Info

February 14th, 2012 by Mike Rowfone

Whitney Houston will be laid to rest privately near her childhood church in Newark, NJ and will not have a public memorial according to NBC New York.

The 18,000-seat Prudential Center had been planned as a setting for a public memorial, but the family decided overnight to keep services private, a source confirmed to NBC New York.

A private invite-only funeral is scheduled for Saturday at noon at New Hope Baptist Church. It will be closed off to the public and media.

According to NBC New York:

Thousands had been expected to attend the Prudential memorial Friday, and it’s likely crowds will end up in the area around the church on Saturday instead. The Prudential Center showed Houston’s face in lights Monday night as a tribute to the singer, who was found dead in a hotel room in Los Angeles Saturday

The singer’s body was flown to New Jersey by private plane Monday evening and arrived at Teterboro Airport just before 11 p.m.

A police escort traveled with Houston’s body to the Whigham Funeral Home.

Chaka Pulled Out of “Inappropriate” Whitney Tribute

February 13th, 2012 by Mike Rowfone

The legendary Chaka Khan pulled out of honoring her close friend and former background singer, Whitney Houston, during the Grammy Awards as originally planned.

After Houston’s unexpected death yesterday afternoon in the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Grammy producers immediately reached out to Jennifer Hudson and Chaka to perform a tribute to Houston. Though she initially agreed, after careful consideration Khan issued the following statement via Twitter:

“As I grieve the loss of my friend and ‘little sister,’ I don’t feel it appropriate to perform at this time. Continue to pray for the family.”

The show went on as Jennifer Hudson performed her rendition of “I Will Always Love You.” Those with access to rehearsals say that the singer, who received her Grammy from Houston and is a life-long fan, struggled through tears and emotions as she was preparing to sing the song that Houston made a classic in the 1992 classic, “The Bodyguard.” Check out her tribute here.

Jennifer Hudson’s Tribute To Whitney Houston

February 13th, 2012 by Mike Rowfone

In a simple black dress, with only a piano serving as accompaniment, Hudson soared through the notes with a control and quiet strength that is typically absent in her powerhouse vocals.

Houston presented Hudson with her first Grammy award in 2009, saying at the time that the distinction “almost overshadowed getting the Grammy.”

It was reported that Hudson had such a difficult time making it through rehearsal, breaking into tears as she tried to sing the famous lyrics, that Grammy insiders didn’t think she would able to make it through the performance — but she did it and did it well.
